Urban Art City
February 23, 2019 – April 27, 2019
“Urban Art City” is the project of Street Levels Gallery for the city of Follonica (GR): a festival composed of various interconnected initiatives, all of which have urban art in its expressions as the lowest common denominator. The festival took place from February 23 to April 27, 2019 in several important locations in the city: the Pinacoteca Civica, chosen for the collective exhibition of seventeen artists, the middle school A. Bugiani, chosen for the workshop initiatives with Ache77, NiAn and Guerrilla Spam, and finally the ex-Ilva iron and steel complex where the murals of Exit Enter, Zed1, Ache77 are located.
Engaging, fresh, participatory: “Urban Art City” is a project intended to involve the entire citizenry, exporting, in a place mainly known for its seaside attractions, a new way of using public space. The variety of the proposed activities aims, therefore, to intercept the needs of different community groups, creating urban paths with cultural, but also educational and social purposes.
With this festival, Street Levels Gallery has established itself for the first time in an urban context different from the Florentine one, becoming over the months a point of reference for the local community and at the same time an attractive destination for people visiting the city, even in winter. The multi-proposal of Urban Art City actually transforms the city into an open-air museum, as the title of the event itself somehow suggests, intervening in the local territory without invading it, but enhancing its urban conformation and its past cultural value.
